How it began
In my household, food has always played a central role, bringing us together and providing comfort, especially during uncertain times like the pandemic. With three kids who were avid fans of cooking channels on Youtube, our kitchen became a hub of culinary exploration. They would enthusiastically bake and experiment with dishes they discovered on TV, and their younger brother was always there to lend a helping hand.
Inspired by their delicious creations, my kids urged me to join them in starting a food business. Together, we embarked on crafting and selling homemade cheesecake ice cream, delivering these delectable treats within our subdivision. Word quickly spread about their rich and creamy ice cream, and soon our neighbors affectionately referred to them as Ola's ice cream makers.
However, as the following summer arrived, my children's interests shifted, and they moved on to new ventures, leaving behind their ice cream enterprise. Nevertheless, our passion for food remained unwavering as we continued to indulge in culinary delights from around the globe, constantly seeking new flavors and experiences.
During a visit to Kigali in 2021, I discovered a surprising void: the absence of food tours to savor the local cuisine. How could such a vibrant city not offer events or activities centered around its culinary heritage? Determined to fill this gap, I decided to create something extraordinary. And so, Jollof'Appétit was born.
Fast forward to today, and Jollof'Appétit proudly stands as Kigali's very first Walking Food Tour business. I’ve enjoyed food tours in Paris, Cairo, New Orleans, Cuba, and Toronto. By far, my very favorite food tour experience was in Old Saigon, Vietnam. I rode on a scooter with a tour guide. It was the most unique and memorable experience hopping from one food stop to the next tasting savory meals with the locals. My hope is to bring such exhilarating and fun experience to Rwanda, my future home.
